The steps of the laser operation

Steps 1: Free screening

The screening consultation is done at the Vision Laser center by appointment. It is free and without obligation. It is intended to evaluate your vision defect and to determine if a laser operation is possible.

  • Evaluation of your vision and cornea
  • Initial diagnosis of your eligibility for surgery
  • Clear explanation of the different laser operation techniques

During this consultation, you will be given all the information about your procedure, you will receive explanatory documents and the team will answer your questions. Following the screening, it is then possible to schedule the preoperative consultation.

Step 2: Preoperative consultation

The consultation lasts two hours during which the surgeon and his team perform a thorough examination of your eyes. The purpose of this examination is to establish a complete diagnosis and to suggest the most appropriate intervention technique (Femto Lasik /TransPKR / Supracor).

  • Evaluation of your vision (with and without dilation)
  • Corneal topography (mapping of the anterior and posterior surface of the cornea)
  • Pachymetry (corneal thickness)
  • Aberrometry (optical aberration measurements)
  • Fundus (examination of all areas of your eye) and eye pressure
  • Pupillometry (test to evaluate the reaction of your pupils to different light intensities)

Steps 3: The laser operation

The operation
When you arrive, you may be offered a relaxing drink. You will then lie comfortably in the operating theatre under the laser device, and an anaesthetic will be administered simply by instilling eye drops that numb the surface of your eye.

A small retractor holds your eyelids open and the procedure can then proceed according to the method chosen beforehand (Femto Lasik / TransPRK / Supracor).

The operation is quick (around 15 minutes) and painless.

The first phase, access to the corneal treatment zone, is carried out.

Then, in the second phase, the laser modifies the curvature of your cornea according to your correction. Thanks to the Eye-Tracker, the laser follows the micromovements of the eye during treatment, ensuring perfect precision and safety.

You will be provided with protective eyewear as soon as you leave the operating theatre.

4. Post-operative follow-up

Post-operative follow-up consists of 3 or 4 appointments, depending on the technique used. Our doctors ensure that your eyes are perfectly cared for until they have fully recovered, and are available to answer any questions you may have.

FEMTOSECOND LASIK

3 control appointments :

  • The day after the operation
  • 1 week after the operation
  • 3 months after the operation

TRANS-PRK

4 control appointments (vision and corneal topography):

  • The day after the operation
  • 4 days after the operation (the protective lens is removed)
  • 1 month after the operation
  • 3 months after the operation

Dr. Bijan Farpour

Holder of specialisation in ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Geneva, Doctor Bijan Farpour pursued post-graduate training for three years in Australia in Sydney at the Eye Hospital and Eye Institute in the field of cornea and refractive surgery.

Dr Sylviane Von Gunten

Former Head of Clinic for three years at the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG), doctor Sylviane von Gunten has been an independent doctor since October 1998.

Dr. Ariane de Lassus

Dr de Lassus-Bristow has been in private practice in Geneva since December 2020 and focuses her activity on refractive surgery as well as cataract surgery

Dr. David Tabibian

Born in Geneva, Dr Tabibian completed his medical studies at the University of Geneva and then began his training as an ophthalmologist at the University Hospitals of Geneva.
