Switzerland's vision revolution: ICL – The clear path to life without glasses and contacts

ICL offers a unique and reversible solution, providing a lasting alternative to glasses and contacts, without altering the natural structure of your eyes

See life clearly with freedom from glasses and contacts

Our patients often feel a deep sense of relief when everyday life starts to feel simple, clear, and free again

Find comfort from the daily strain of poor vision

Before ICL surgery, life can feel tiring. Glasses may press on your face. Contacts may make your eyes feel dry, sore, or irritated. You may wake up and reach for help before you can see clearly. After treatment, many people feel relief from that daily strain. Vision can feel clearer without the same need for glasses or contacts. Simple moments, like opening your eyes in the morning, can feel calm and easy.

Feel free from the worry of relying on glasses or contacts

Poor vision can affect more than your eyes. It can make you feel limited, frustrated, or self-conscious. You may worry about losing your glasses, running out of contacts, or feeling stuck without them. After ICL surgery, many people feel lighter. They can enjoy life with more confidence and less daily worry. The change is not just about seeing better. It is about feeling more in control of your day and your choices.

Wake up to a day that feels clear, easy, and yours

Imagine waking up and seeing the room clearly. No searching for glasses. No contact lenses. No dry eyes from long hours of wear. You get ready faster. You drive, work, exercise, and meet friends with less fuss. Your day feels smoother because your vision is no longer the first problem you have to solve. Life still feels normal, but it feels easier. That is the kind of day many patients hope for.

Be seen as more confident, relaxed, and ready for life

Before treatment, others may notice you cleaning your glasses, avoiding photos, or struggling with contacts. You may not feel like your best self. After ICL surgery, people may see you as more confident and at ease. You may feel more open in social moments. You may enjoy sport, work, travel, and family time without the same visual barriers. The change can show in how you move, smile, and take part in life.

A great solution if you have high prescription needs
  • When laser surgery is not feasible (this concerns up to 5% of patients), it is appropriate to focus on implants (ICL).
  • The intervention makes it possible to correct optical defects not accessible by laser such as:
    • cornea too thin
    • suspicion of keratoconus or fragile cornea
    • severe myopia and astigmatism
These extremely thin implants are slipped between the iris and the lens. Their thinness is similar to contact lenses, hence their name ICL “Implantable Contact Lens"

It is now a modern, simple and safe alternative to laser. High-precision implants can be “customized” according to each person’s visual disorder

The procedure takes place under local anesthesia with sedation. A very thin implant is slipped through a 3 millimeter corneal incision between the posterior surface of the iris and the anterior surface of the lens. The color of the eyes is not changed and recovery is very quick and without any pain. More than 2 million of these implants have been placed over the past 25 years.

ICL surgery can be a good option for people who are not suitable for laser eye surgery. It can treat higher prescriptions and does not remove tissue from the cornea, which is the clear front window of the eye. The lens can also be removed if needed. Many people enjoy clear vision with less need for glasses or contact lenses.

The disadvantages are that it is still surgery. It may cost more than laser treatment. It also needs careful checks to confirm that your eye has enough space for the lens.

ICL surgery is usually safe when performed on suitable eyes, but every procedure has risks. These may include infection, inflammation, raised eye pressure, glare, halos, dry eyes, or changes in vision. In some cases, the lens may need to be adjusted, replaced, or removed. Rarely, cataracts or damage to the natural lens can occur. Careful testing before surgery helps reduce these risks. Your surgeon will check your eye shape, prescription, eye pressure, and overall eye health before advising treatment.

Alternatives to ICL surgery include glasses, contact lenses, LASIK, PRK, and lens replacement surgery. The right choice depends on your age, prescription, corneal thickness, eye health, and lifestyle. Laser treatment may suit people with lower prescriptions and healthy corneas. Lens replacement may suit older patients or people with early lens changes. Glasses and contact lenses remain non-surgical options. A full eye assessment is the safest way to compare your choices.

ICL surgery starts with a detailed eye assessment. Your surgeon checks your prescription, eye pressure, cornea, pupil size, and the space inside your eye. If you are suitable, the lens is ordered for your eye. On the day of surgery, numbing drops are used. A small opening is made at the edge of the cornea. The ICL is placed inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The lens is positioned, the eye is checked, and recovery begins.
