What is a clear lens?
What is a clear lens?
Have you heard about clear lens surgery and wondered what it means? At Vision Laser in Geneva, we’re here to make it simple.
A clear lens, also called a refractive lens, is the natural lens inside your eye. It helps focus light so you can see clearly. When you’re young, this lens is flexible and clear. You can easily focus on things both near and far.
But as we get older, the lens can lose its flexibility. You might find it harder to read small print or focus up close, this is called presbyopia. Over time, the lens can also become cloudy, which leads to cataracts.
That’s where clear lens surgery comes in.
What happens in clear lens surgery?
In clear lens surgery (also known as refractive lens exchange, or RLE), your natural lens is gently removed and replaced with an artificial lens. This new lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). It’s made from a safe, high-quality material designed to stay clear for life.
The surgery is quick and painless. It usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes per eye. You don’t feel pain because the eye is numbed with special drops. Most people go home the same day and notice better vision within a few days.
At Vision Laser, our surgeons use advanced technology to plan and guide every step. Your comfort and safety always come first.
Why choose clear lens surgery?
Clear lens surgery can help if:
- You need glasses or contact lenses for distance and near vision
- You have strong prescriptions for short-sightedness, long-sightedness, or astigmatism
- You’re not a good candidate for laser eye surgery (like LASIK)
- You want long-term freedom from glasses
Because the natural lens is replaced, you won’t develop cataracts later. That means one surgery for clearer vision, for life.
Different types of lenses
There are different kinds of intraocular lenses to fit your lifestyle:
- Monofocal lenses, for clear distance vision; you may still need reading glasses.
- Multifocal lenses, help you see near and far without glasses.
- Toric lenses, correct astigmatism for sharper vision.
During your consultation at Vision Laser, your eye specialist will recommend the best lens type for your eyes and your daily needs.
What are the benefits?
- Sharper, clearer vision
- No risk of future cataracts
- Reduced need for glasses or contacts
- Quick recovery time
- Safe, modern, and lasting results
Many of our patients tell us they feel more confident and free after surgery, reading, driving, and seeing the world clearly again.
Are there any risks?
Like any eye surgery, clear lens exchange has small risks, such as infection or swelling. At Vision Laser, we take every precaution to minimize these. Our experienced surgeons use leading-edge tools and techniques to make sure your results are safe and stable.
Is it right for you?
If you’re over 40 and your vision has changed, or if you’re tired of switching between different glasses, clear lens surgery might be a great choice.
